Lake Como in the rain

Heading out for a day trip, especially to a place that is famously beautiful, such as Lake Como, you always seem to be taking your chances with the weather, no matter how much you prepare. Certainly, my recent one from Bergamo to this iconic Italian destination was evidence enough for exactly that.

The journey began early, with the anticipation of exploring the famous Italian lake spurring me from the warmth of my hotel room in central Bergamo. The train journey from Bergamo to Milan Centrale, and then onto Lake Como, was priced reasonably at €6 each way, booked online with Omio.

As the rush hour train headed toward Milan, filled with commuters armed with umbrellas, the weather took a turn for the worse. By the time I reached Lake Como, a torrential downpour had engulfed the area, transforming the day’s plans into a challenge against the elements. Despite the weather, the lake retained a certain allure, its beauty veiled but not vanquished by the relentless rain. However, the conditions meant that my camera remained mostly unused, managing only a few snapshots that captured the moody atmosphere of the lake under stormy skies.

A couple of hours into the visit, with the rain showing no signs of abating, I decided to return to Bergamo earlier than anticipated. My time at Lake Como was brief, and the envisioned leisurely explorations along its banks and café visits were thwarted by the weather.

The journey back was a time for contemplation. The rain against the train windows offered a backdrop for reflection, reminding me of the unpredictable nature of travel and the importance of embracing the journey itself, regardless of the destination. While I had hoped to see Lake Como bathed in sunlight, experiencing its stormier side offered a different perspective, revealing a unique beauty that few may seek but is equally captivating.

This day trip, though dampened by rain, underscored that adventure and beauty can be found in the most unexpected circumstances. A day spent at Lake Como, even under a deluge, is a day spent in one of the most enchanting corners of the world.

It’s these unplanned moments that often remain etched in our memories, teaching us the value of finding beauty amidst the rain and stories within the storms.
