Welcome to Tynemouth, a coastal haven nestled in the heart of the North East, where golden sands meet cold, yet clear waters, and history sits alongside nature. I visit two of Tynemouth’s most iconic beaches on an almost daily basis: Longsands and King Edward’s Bay.
LONGSANDS
Stretching approximately 1.3 kilometres from Cullercoats Bay to King Edward’s Bay, Longsands embodies the epitome of beach perfection. With its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, it’s no wonder Longsands has been honoured with the prestigious Blue Flag award. From clean bathing waters to litter-free sands and top-notch visitor facilities, Longsands sets the standard for beach excellence.
Longsands is more than just a beach; it’s a playground for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. Surfing enthusiasts flock to Longsands to ride its legendary waves, with the beach having hosted national surfing championships that showcase its prowess as a surfing hotspot. And for those seeking a leisurely day by the shore, Longsands offers endless opportunities for sunbathing, eating out, and beachside chills.
Overlooking the southern end of Longsands stands St. George’s Church, a historic landmark that adds to the beach’s timeless charm. Meanwhile, remnants of the former Tynemouth Outdoor Swimming Pool at the south end serve as a reminder of Longsands’ rich history as a beloved visitor attraction since Victorian times.

King Edward’s Bay: Where History Meets Tranquillity
At the foot of Tynemouth Priory and Castle lies King Edward’s Bay, a small sandy beach embraced by cliffs and grassy banks. As a Blue Flag and Seaside award-winning beach, King Edward’s Bay epitomises relaxation and family-friendly fun. Whether you’re basking in the sun’s warm embrace or exploring the nearby cafés and shops along Tynemouth Front Street, every moment spent at this idyllic bay is a treasure.
While dogs may be banned on the beach between 1st May to 30th September, the RNLI’s vigilant lifeguards ensure a safe environment for all visitors, especially during the summer months.
